yummy smells from the kitchen

There's much more to home cheap home than meets the eye. Living domestically (and fabulously frugally) requires creativity, thought, and often - planning. Tonight, I had planned to dine in on a classic family recipe that I often hated as a youngster, but was thrilled to try making my first time out as a single adult.

My Aunt Car deserves all of the credit for this delicious Swiss Ham Ring-Around, an easy, yet attractive meal whose original recipe was intended for a family much larger than that of one. For all intents and purposes,I decided to toy with the amounts and came up with a singularly fabulous version, perfectly proportioned for dining alone. The modified recipe is as follows:

4 broccoli florets
1 tsp parsley flakes
1 T chopped onion
1 T mustard
1/2 tsp margarine
1/4 tsp lemon juice
1/4 C shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 C shredded Swiss cheese
3 T (rounded) chopped diced ham
1 mini can refrigerated crescent rolls (4 ct.)
grated Parmesan cheese

Cook and drain broccoli. In small bowl, mix parsley flakes, chopped onion, mustard, margarine, and lemon juice. Add shredded cheese, diced ham, and broccoli to mixture, stirring well.

Separate crescent rolls. Arrange in circle, points out, on greased cookie sheet. Spoon on filling. Fold over until sealed and mold crescent rolls into unified circle, creating solid form.

Sprinkle top with grated Parmesan. May add garlic powder lightly to taste.

Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Serve hot and enjoy!

Post cooking impressions: Overall, I give this single girl recipe 4 out of 5 forks! Not only was it attractive to serve, but much more delish than my little girl memory remembered it to be. Prep time was under 15 minutes, making this a satisfying meal for coming home after a long day at work. It has great comfort food potential and yet there's a certain element of je ne sais quoi about it - there's a little mysteriousness hidden inside this unique donut-shaped entree!

I will be adding this to my regular single girl cooking repertoire. Yum! Thanks, Aunt Car!
